When choosing a life insurance broker, you need to understand what a broker is supposed to do for you. When you understand this, you can now look for qualities that would point to a life insurance broker that would fulfill these expectations.
The first thing to note is that a life insurance broker acts for you and in your interest. It is interesting to note that a life insurance broker is expected by law to put your interest above his/hers. They are supposed to be more knowledgeable about the insurance market and are therefore expected to give you relevant advice to help you get the most suitable and affordable life insurance policy from what is on offer. However, they can not take a decision without your consent. You are the boss.
The compensation a life insurance broker gets comes from the insurance company. They usually get a certain percentage of the first years premium, and depending on the insurance company, they could get some residual benefits for maintaining the policy.
If there is anything you can get from the above, it is that you do not gain anything by going to an inexperienced life insurance broker.
Now, how do you choose a suitable life insurance broker?
Given all that the life insurance broker should do for you, it is necessary that you find a life insurance broker that is very friendly, knowledgeable and willing to explain any details you need to know. You can start by seeing how freely s/he would be willing to let you know insurance companies they can work with. You also want a life insurance broker that would be honest enough to tell you what they would gain if you bought a particular policy. Honesty often shows someone who is sincere and has nothing to hide.
One major reason why you need to have a honest life insurance broker is that, you could have a policy that would suit you best but may not be as rewarding for the broker as would another policy that is not right for you. A broker on the look out for him/herself would of course find a way to make you go for the policy that would profit him/her most. Remember that your interest should come before any other consideration.
Like in most things, look for a creditable track record with a life insurance broker. There is always the temptation to look for policies that would pay the most rather than what would be best for the client. A life insurance broker who has a reputation to protect would prefer to maintain this reputation and track record.
Always remember that the final decision is yours. The life insurance broker should explain everything to you and then allow you make your decision. You should never work with a life insurance broker who wants to pressure you into buying a particular policy not matter how lovely they say it is. His/her job is to explain things fully to you and let you decide.
The decision is yours.
